Requirement That Pulverized Mill Should Satisfy

In this article, I will share the requirements that a pulverized mill should satisfy for it to be considered efficient.

Pulverized mills are very essential in the entire system of pulverized coal firing.

Without the mills, there is no way the pulverized coal will be produced.

In general, we can say that the efficiency of the pulverized coal firing system depends on how effective the pulverized mill is.

Without wasting so much time on the introduction, let me share the requirements that pulverized mills should fulfil.

These are the requirements that the pulverized mill should satisfy to be considered efficient;

1. It should deliver the required amount of pulverized coal.

As I said earlier, the efficiency of the pulverized coal firing system depends on the efficiency of the mill installed in the system.

If the mill can’t grind the required amount of coal, the rest of the system is going to be faulty.

Lots of work is done at the pulverized mill, the rest is just conveying and feeding the furnace.

For a pulverized mill to be considered effective, it should be able to deliver the required amount of coal.

By delivering, the mill should crash and grind enough pulverized coal that is needed by the boiler unit.

If the pulverized mill can’t produce the required amount of coal, it will leave the entire pulverized coal firing system unfit for use.

For the pulverized mill to deliver the required tonnage of coal to the bin or the furnace, its grinding tools should be effective.

Apart from that, the coal firing system should utilize its capacity to the fullest to grind the coal fast enough to meet the demand for the pulverized coal needed in the furnace in a certain period.

2. The pulverized coal produced by the mill should be of the required size.

The pulverized mill should crash and grind the coal to produce the finest powdered coal that will burn completely in the furnace.

There is a required size of the coal that will burn effectively in the furnace.

You have to know that the furnace was designed to burn pulverized coal of certain sizes.

The mill selected should be able to produce pulverized coal of wide ranges of sizes.

The main reason behind this, is to ensure that even when the pulverized mill is installed into another system, let us say it was on a bin and then it was moved to the direct system, it should be able to work effectively.

The pulverized mill should not only produce powdered coal of a certain fineness but produce a variety of fineness that may be needed in the furnace.

It should produce pulverized coal of a wide range of fineness but it shouldn’t produce the wrong size of fineness needed.

If by any chance the pulverized mill produces the wrong size of the pulverized coal, the entire system will never work.

The pulverized coal with the wrong size will hardly be transported, if it manages to move through the system, it will hardly be ejected into the furnace.

The burner is usually designed to handle a certain size of pulverized coal, in most cases it is usually in the range of 70 to 100 microns.

Below or above this number, the entire pulverized coal firing system will not work.

This is the requirement that a pulverized mill should fulfil for it to be considered effective for use.

3. The pulverized mill should be quiet in operation.

The pulverized mill should be quiet in operation, this is a requirement it should fulfil.

Maybe you might conclude that since the mill is mostly involved in crushing and grinding the coal, it should be noisy when in operation.

The pulverized mill should be quiet in operation to provide a conducive working environment to the operators.

A noisy pulverized mill is considered unfit for use since it will affect the working environment in the power plant.

If it turns out that a pulverized mill is noisy when operating, that should tell you that it needs repairs or maintenance.

4. It should consume low power.

For a pulverized mill to be considered effective for use in pulverized coal firing system, it should consume less power.

Power consumption in a power plant is a very sensitive thing that needs to be controlled.

If the power plant components will consume too much power, this will keep on increasing the cost of operation of the power plant.

When that happens, losses are likely going to be incurred instead of profits.

When selecting a pulverized mill, one should ensure that it consumes a low amount of power since it will be working for longer hours.

As long as the power plant is operating, the pulverized mill will also be working to produce the pulverized coal.

So, if its power consumption is higher, the running cost of the power plant is going to increase tremendously.

The pulverized mill should consume less amount of power but produce higher efficiency in its operation.

5. The maintenance cost of the pulverized mill should be lower.

The maintenance cost of the pulverized mill should be lower if it’s to be considered effective.

Low maintenance costs will keep the mill running for a long term in the power plant.

But if the maintenance costs are higher, when it’s damaged and the budget is limited in the power plant, it will have to be kept aside.

This will only leave the power plant functionless because the entire process depends on the heat energy.

The operators will have no choice but to spend so much money on maintaining the mill.

At the end of the day, the running costs of the power plant are going to increase simply because a mill is in use.

It’s economical in power plants to find ways to reduce the maintenance of each component if profits are to be expected.

Lastly…

The pulverized mill should satisfy all these points I have talked about in this article for it to be considered effective for use.

If a mill can’t satisfy these requirements, it should not be installed in a pulverized coal firing system because it will only bring losses.

The maintenance part of the pulverized mill, I can’t stress that enough since it’s an essential part that should be considered if the mill is to operate under high efficiencies.
