Advantages & Disadvantages of Nuclear Power Plant

In this article, I will share with you the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear power plants. The nuclear power plant has become one source of energy production that is highly reliable due to its efficiency.

 

It produces a large amount of energy required to meet the demands of consumers, especially in this era of the industrial revolution.

 

The nuclear power plant has a lot of benefits but it also poses a threat to the health of the operators and the population close to the power plant.

 

I will share with you the positive side of nuclear energy production and the negative side of it.

 

And think about it and ask yourself if it’s worth it to use nuclear energy to meet the demands of the consumers.

Advantages of nuclear power plant;

1. Nuclear power plants require less space when setting them up.

When setting up a nuclear power plant you require less space compared to the steam power plant.

 

This is an economic feature of the nuclear power plant since you won’t need a large space to set it up.

 

The space it requires is small thus occupying a small area that is supposed to be left inhibited around the nuclear power plant.

 

When you try to compare the nuclear power plant with other power plants you will find that the nuclear power plant is the only plant that occupies a small area, leaving out the area around the nuclear power plant.

 

2. Consumes a small amount of fuel.

The fuel needed by the nuclear power plant is very minimal thus reducing the fuel cost.

 

This makes the nuclear power plant a priority since the small amount of fuel used produces a great amount of energy.

 

The other thing is that the fuel transportation cost is less when you compare it to coal or any other fuel used for heating.

 

This results in minimum use of the resources needed to operate the nuclear power plant.

 

You also don’t need a big storage facility to store the fuel used in nuclear power plants.

 

This saves the extra expenses to be used in other areas that matter the most.

 

3. Increased reliability of operation.

Nuclear power plants are highly reliable because of the amount of energy they produce.

 

They produce a large amount of energy that meets the demands of the consumer without a hassle no matter the size of the plant.

 

There is no point in the power produced from the nuclear power plant will not meet the demands of the consumer and that is why it’s highly reliable.

 

If the energy is needed to operate machines in industries, the operators are certain that the power needed will fit their demands.

 

This facilitates easier and fast production of products in the industries.

 

You can’t say the same with the other types of power production plants.

 

4. Not affected by adverse weather conditions.

Nuclear power plants are not affected by adverse weather conditions since they only depend on the chemical reaction to produce the heat that is used to provide the energy needed.

 

It doesn’t matter whether there is a flood or drought, the nuclear power plant will keep on producing energy as long as it’s in a secure location.

 

This makes nuclear power plants most reliable since they are all-weather.

 

If you think about steam power plants or any other power plants that depend on the energy from the environment, the moment the weather changes, the power production process is interfered with.

 

This makes nuclear power plants very advantageous compared to other power plants.

 

5. Suitable for large plants with higher energy demand.

The energy produced by a nuclear power plant is higher and it can meet any demands of the consumers.

 

Nuclear power plants are suitable for large plants that require higher energy demand.

 

The amount of energy produced by the nuclear power plant is enough to meet the demand of any plant.

 

Steam or solar power plants can’t be used for large plants that require higher energy demand.

 

That is where the nuclear power plant comes in.

 

6. Material expenditure is less.

Nuclear power plants require less material expenditure since the space they occupy is small and the components are less.

 

With a nuclear power plant, you won’t waste much on the purchase of pipes, storage facility of any transportation networks and complicated parts as in other power plants.

 

This makes it easier to set up a nuclear power plant not when you compare it with a steam power plant.

 

7. It does not require a large quantity of water.

The amount of water needed to operate a nuclear power plant is less compared to a steam power plant.

 

With a steam power plant, you need millions of gallons of water to keep the power plant running.

 

But with nuclear power plants, you only need a reasonable amount of water that can aid in the transfer of heat energy and you are okay to go.

 

Disadvantages of nuclear power plant;

1. The initial cost of nuclear power plants is high.

Despite the amazing details of a nuclear power plant I have shared with you, this is one of the disadvantages of a nuclear power plant.

 

The initial cost of a nuclear power plant is higher compared to the cost of a hydro or steam power plant.

 

Acquiring the tools to use in the nuclear power plant is quite costly and this makes it harder for some countries in the world to use nuclear energy production.

 

2. Not suited for varying load conditions.

Nuclear energy is not suitable for some applications since the energy produced is very high.

 

Imagine nuclear fission produces about 200 million-electron volts with 2.5 neutrons production, if this is used in a varying load condition then it will destroy the load.

 

Some of the machines can’t operate under such a higher power. This makes nuclear power energy not preferable to other areas.

 

3. Radioactive waste is a huge problem.

When you talk about nuclear power plants the only thing that comes into peoples’ minds is the radioactive waste.

 

The waste of nuclear power plants is usually very dangerous to the health of the operators and the people living nearby of the nuclear power plant.

 

If the waste is not handled carefully it will affect the health of workers and other populations and render the area inhabitable.

 

Also, when it comes to the control of waste, this is another huge problem that comes with nuclear power plants.

 

It’s very expensive to control the waste since they require a higher capital.

 

This is one of the reasons that make the nuclear power plant very disadvantageous.

 

If at any point where the waste is stored is destroyed, this will also cause huge health hazard problems.
